I am currently accepting wagers as to whether or not he will drive away like that.
I know very little about towing trailers. How safe or not safe is that?

Less rolling resistance, so he can more effectively tailgate your ass.

I’d like to see you try that in a BMW!

His business certificate course just had a unit about eliminating redundancy...

hard to take the Expert claim seriously when your expert is missing a tire.

The axle would most likely drag. In a best case scenario, it’ll just severely slow you down until you decide to pull over. Worst case, axle bounces off the pavement, trailer loses control, and probably jackknife.

Tailgate or pull a trailer?
Sadly because of the exhaust placement on the E90 M3, it can’t tow things. I looked into this because at the time I wanted to get an M3 track car, then tow it to the track with an M3.

He is currently up on the ladder replacing an entire set of second-floor windows. I am really tempted to go outside and ask him if he’s really qualified to change your windows when he can’t change a tire.

how safe is it? on a scale of 1 (certain death) to 10 (nothing) I give it a 4 (playing the odds)

Well he’s missing wheels from both sides.
I’d say he’s been driving like that for a while.

Just turn your M3 into a Ute, and install a fifth wheel.
Problem solved.

Tailgate minus one wheel.

Depends a little on loads and on time. The extra bind on the interspring links and bolts could break things at way less than even the single axle capacity under the right circumstances. That’s not even counting the stability fuckage of different springing left to right.

The angle makes it look like he’s missing one from both sides but actually both of the left wheels are there.

Ok!
Let me replace the steering wheel with one of these, you never specified which wheel.

I like the one BMW made better http://blog.caranddriver.com/the-full-scoop-on-bmws-april-fools-m3-pickup/ it’s even a targa.
There’s an E39 M5 Ute out there also http://www.autoblog.com/2011/03/17/meet-the-other-bmw-with-a-bed-stuart-applebys-m5-ute/#slide-248368
I would love any of them.

Also this showed up to my location one day, apparently you don’t need all you trailer wheels to be functional to drive.

I’ve had a wheel come off a dual-axle trailer with a 3000# boat on it. The drum brake on the axle came about 1" from the pavement. So... any bump in the road whatsoever would have been a big problem. I was able to pull over right away, and was only on a side street going maybe 25. Very lucky.

Call the police, tell them there is a blatant equipment violation in front of your house. Chances are there are a BUNCH of DOT regs he’s breaking.
Better to make him aware of it now BEFORE he crashes into that van full of infants.

The best concrete guy I’ve ever met, kept his trucks in deplorable condition. One skill has nothing to do with the other.

The tire on that side is seriously overloaded now. If he was smart, he’d replace them both on that side. Since he’s driving without one, he’d probably not that smart.
That said, let’s give the guy the benefit of the doubt. Let’s say the trailer tire popped this morning, and he has a job to do. He’s self-employed, so if he doesn’t go to work, then he doesn’t get paid. I’d do the same thing if I were him ... but I’d drive REALLY slowly and carefully and get those tires replaced on the way home.

Believe me, I know. Our tree guy is excellent, and he drives the sketchiest old Bondo-covered Ford truck you’ve ever seen. I was just making a point.
